Principal's Message

Last Wednesday we held our Consistent Effort assembly which was an opportunity for us to recognise those students who have been striving to be the best they possibly can be in the classroom. During the assembly I stressed to the students the importance of recognising effort and that the awards were closely associated with the concept of championing a growth mindset.

When championing a growth mindset, we view our brain the same as any other muscle in our body. This concept is referred to as brain plasticity. Brain plasticity refers to the brain having the ability to change and adapt which helps promote:

  • The ability to learn new things
  • The ability to enhance your existing cognitive capabilities
  • Improvements that can promote brain fitness and functioning

Students with a fixed mindset tend to believe that we are born with certain traits and abilities. Student who embrace and look to develop more of a growth mindset believe they can change these traits and abilities and are much more willing to put in extra time and effort to achieve their goals. A growth mindset needs to be backed up with consistent hard work and effort that is applied to worthwhile activities, and even then, success is not inevitable. Students with a growth mindset tend to work harder and smarter, helping them to learn and achieve more than students with a fixed mindset.

Students with a growth mindset may display behaviours like:

  • Asking the teacher to demonstrate a new way to do a math problem
  • Volunteering answers in class even when unsure
  • Asking a question even if it might seem basic or “stupid”
  • Seeking out problems that will push them instead of problems that keep them safely within their comfort zone.
  • View challenges as opportunities for self-improvement.
  • Replace the word “failing” with the word “learning” in your vocabulary.
  • Stop seeking approval for others and prioritize learning over approval.
  • Value the learning process over the end result.
  • Emphasize the relationship between learning and “brain training;” like any other muscle, the brain can be trained.
  • Cultivate grit (determination and perseverance).
  • Abandon the idea of succeeding on talent alone; recognize that it will always take some work and effort as well.

Congratulations to all students who received a consistent effort award. I hope that you continue to demonstrate hard work, effort, and persistence so that you can continue to be the best you can be in all that you do.

God Bless
Craig Frattini

End of Semester

As we come to the end of our first semester, I wish everyone a safe and relaxing break.  Term 3 resumes on Monday 12th July.

We thank you Lord for this semester.
For the challenges, the successes, and the mistakes from which we have learned.
Be with us as we spend our time with family and friends.
Give us strength and courage to do what is right: to be witnesses of our faith.
Help us to be a practical Christian these holidays, to appreciate what others do for us, to give time and effort to help others, to be peacemakers in our family.
Keep us safe in our activities; give us good rest and good fun.
Bring us back refreshed and ready for a new semester.
We thank you for our classmates, teachers, parents, and a community that cares for us.
May we always be conscious of you in our lives.

Amen

Year 10 Business Venture

This term year 10 Business students studied Business Ventures. Business proposals are an important stage of starting a business venture as they can be used to explore the feasibility of the venture or gain funding from external parties. At Burdekin Catholic High School students undertaking business studies are given the opportunity to create (and operate if they choose to) a business venture.
Students came up with innovative ideas ranging from online clothing hire, "Bliss Clothing Hire" to homemade baked cookies with motivational slogans imprinted on them, "Catchy Cookies". Three groups chose to operate their business at school: Sweet Street (Isabella Moloney and Brigitte Davies), B & M Baked Goods (Brook Nelson and Maddison James), and Catchy Cookies (Kiel Keryk, Christopher Muguira and Corey Furlong).

With children spending more time online in the past 12 months, yet still craving social interaction, Omegle offers a virtual solution to making new friends.
But like all online interactions, there is an element of risk.
Omegle is an extremely unsafe site. Here’s what parents and educators need to know about the dangers of Omegle.
